Every year, hundreds of undrafted free agents enter NFL minicamps facing brutal odds of making the 53-man roster. Scrapping for survival, the margin for error is nonexistent. Among this year’s hungry longshots is a compelling trio of players of Asian descent fighting to realize their NFL dreams.
Cleveland Browns defensive end Logan Fano made a major impact during his time at Utah. The 6’5”, 252-pounder of Samoan descent posted 4.5 sacks and earned Second-team All-Big 12 Conference honors this past season. With Cleveland looking to temper its edge presence after trading away future Hall of Famer Myles Garrett, Fano steps into a golden opportunity to prove he belongs, while rejoining his brother and collegiate teammate, offensive tackle Spencer Fano, who was selected ninth overall in this year’s draft by the Browns.
In true Raiders fashion, kicker Kansei Matsuzawa looks to beat the odds. The Japanese native nicknamed “Tokyo Toe” was a Groza finalist at Hawaii after connecting on 93% of his field goals, including a long of 52 yards and a clutch game-winner against Stanford in the opener. Matsuzawa now heads into camp ready to challenge veteran journeyman Matt Gay for the starting job in Las Vegas.
Cornerback Kapena Gushiken brings explosive speed to the Eagles’ secondary. Despite standing just 5’9”, his blistering 4.35 40-yard dash speed makes the Polynesian defender a lethal cover man. He capped off his college career at Ole Miss under the brightest lights by snatching an interception in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Gushiken played his first two years at Washington State, where one of his three interceptions was returned for a touchdown.
The road to an active NFL roster is a grueling gauntlet where every snap counts. Yet, even if these resilient prospects fall just short of the 53-man cut, securing a practice squad spot keeps their foot in the door – leaving them ready and waiting for their name to be called.
