Taylor Rapp Aims to Take the Bills to New Heights

Chinese American Super Bowl LVI champion Taylor Rapp looks to get the Bills over the hump in the last year of his contract.

Buffalo Bills starting safety Taylor Rapp is providing crucial defensive acumen for the league contender in his seventh NFL season.

The Chinese American first made his mark with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Rapp’s best season for both individual and team performance.  Starting all 17 regular season games with the Rams, he tallied a career best 4 interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 6 pass deflections and 94 tackles. 

A head injury in the last game of the regular season sidelined him for the start of the postseason as he entered a mandatory concussion protocol.  The Rams won three games in a row on their way to Super Bowl LVI versus the Cincinnati Bengals, hosted in LA on their home field SoFi Stadium. Rapp returned for the decisive game and contributed 7 tackles in the Rams’ first Super Bowl win playing in Los Angeles.

After being selected by the Rams in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft Rapp would play his first four seasons on a rookie contract worth $4.67 million.  During his 58-game tenure in LA he logged 337 tackles, 23 pass deflections, and 9 interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

As a free agent in 2023 Rapp signed a 3-year $10.6 million contract with the Buffalo Bills.  To date, through 37 games with Buffalo he’s grabbed 4 picks.  The Bills past two seasons have ended in defeat by the Kansas City Chiefs, in which Rapp was sidelined with injuries.  This season the Bills are off to a 4-1 start, inspiring hopes of their first Super Bowl win.

Rapp played three seasons of college football at the University of Washington before declaring for the draft after his junior year.  He was Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2016 and all-conference the next two seasons.  In 2018 Rapp was also named a second-team All-American. The 27-year-old was born in Atlanta, and raised in Bellingham, Washington to a mother from Shanghai and a Canadian father.  He was raised with Chinese values and celebrates traditional Chinese holidays. Rapp’s collection of tattoos includes Chinese calligraphy meaning “little brother” mirrored by his brother Austin who has the “older brother” version.
