The Shocking Truth About Asian Drivers

Federal traffic data shows that Asians aren’t bad drivers, but rather the safest drivers in the country.

Asians are bad drivers. This is one of the most common stereotypes about Asian people, which is funny because it's actually backed by zero evidence. So, let's talk about something people love joking about but never really fact check. 

The stereotype of Asians, especially Asian women, being bad drivers is heard in stand-up comedy, on social media, and in movies and TV shows, but according to sociological research stereotypes like these often don’t reflect the truth. Instead they enforce an idea that has been repeated so many times that people just assume it to be true.

When we look at the data from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Asian Americans have some of the lowest fatal traffic accidents in the country. The numbers extracted from multiple years of data show that Asian Americans have consistently been involved in fewer fatal accidents per capita than every other major racial group. 

In 2021 Asians had the lowest traffic fatality rate in the country with 2.53 per 100,000 people. Asians also made up 6% of the U.S. population but contributed to only 1% of traffic deaths, meaning Asian drivers are underrepresented in these statistics. From 2016 to 2020, Asian traffic fatalities decreased by 34%, the largest decline of all racial groups and from 2017 to 2021, Asians were one of the only groups to see a consistent decline in fatal accidents with a 6% percent decrease. 

The same reports also state that Asian Americans are one of the least likely groups to be involved in alcohol-impaired car accidents and speeding related deaths, which are behaviors most associated with reckless driving. 

Looking at the data, Asian Americans have consistently been some of the safest drivers on the road, completely contradicting the myth that has been heard for decades. At the end of the day, these stereotypes are rooted in repetition rather than reality and once we move past the assumptions and actually examine the facts, the narrative can be picked apart.
