The Destructive Values Inversion That Makes MAGA So Repugnant to Rational People

Placing race and nationality above respect for humanity is not only morally offensive but sows the seeds of a society's swift destruction.

To be sure, what makes MAGA so repugnant to me isn't the shenanigans of its current leader, no matter how destructive and disoriented they are.  It's the fundamental principle on which it and every other racially exclusionary movement is founded.

Let's begin with the fact that every moral tradition worth the name — religious or secular, ancient or modern — rests on a hierarchy of loyalties. 

At the summit sits something universal: God, humanity, the moral law, the inherent dignity of persons. Below that come the narrower attachments that give life its texture: nation, community, family, self. The order matters. When the universal sits above the particular, our smaller loyalties are disciplined by something larger than themselves. Patriotism becomes love of country constrained by justice. Family loyalty becomes devotion constrained by honesty. Self-interest becomes ambition constrained by decency.

The core objection that so many thoughtful people — including many lifelong conservatives — raise against the MAGA movement is that it inverts this hierarchy. It does not merely love America; it places American identity, and often a racialized conception of that identity, above the universal obligations that are supposed to govern how any nation treats any human being. Once that inversion is made, everything else follows: the cruelty toward migrants celebrated as strength, the contempt for international humanitarian norms recast as sovereignty, the winking tolerance of open bigotry rebranded as candor. The inversion is the disease; the daily outrages are merely symptoms.

The Proper Order of Loyalties

Begin with what the correct hierarchy looks like, because the movement's defenders often accuse critics of opposing patriotism itself. They do not. Love of country is a genuine virtue, and the liberal tradition that MAGA claims to defend has always said so. What that tradition insists upon is that national loyalty is a middle loyalty — real, binding, but subordinate. The Declaration of Independence does not open with an assertion of American greatness. It opens with a universal claim: that all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights. The nation is then justified by reference to that universal claim. America, in its own founding logic, is a means to a moral end, not the end itself.

This ordering is not uniquely American or uniquely liberal. Christianity commands love of neighbor and welcome of the stranger before it says anything about borders. Kant's categorical imperative asks whether a principle could be willed universally — a test that no ethnic preference can pass. Even Burke, patron saint of conservatism, insisted that the "little platoons" of local attachment were the first link in a chain that ascends to love of country and, ultimately, of mankind. The chain ascends. It is not supposed to terminate at the flag.

When the Pyramid Flips

MAGA's distinctive move is to flip the pyramid. "America First" is, on its face, an innocuous statement of ordinary national interest — every government prioritizes its citizens. But in practice, the movement's rhetoric and policy agenda go much further. They treat the interests, grievances, and cultural anxieties of a particular vision of America — one that is implicitly and sometimes explicitly white, Christian, and native-born — as morally supreme, answerable to nothing above them.

Consider what this inversion licenses. If national and racial identity sit at the top of the hierarchy, then the suffering of a child at the border is not a moral emergency; it is a deterrence strategy. The demonization of immigrants as "poisoning the blood" of the country is not a shameful echo of history's darkest rhetoric; it is plain talk. Alliances built on shared democratic values become suckers' bargains. International law becomes a scam perpetrated on the strong by the weak. Fellow citizens who dissent become not opponents but enemies within — because once the tribe is the highest value, disagreement with the tribe is not error but treason.

None of this requires that every MAGA voter be a bigot, and honest critics should say so plainly. Many are drawn to the movement by legitimate grievances: deindustrialization, elite condescension, communities hollowed out while both parties shrugged. But the movement they have joined channels those grievances through an inverted moral structure, and structures shape outcomes regardless of the private decency of individuals. A machine built to elevate identity above humanity will grind humanity down, whatever the intentions of those feeding it their votes.

Why Rational Minds Recoil

Call people who reject this "rational" and you will be accused of smugness, so let us be precise about what rationality means here. It does not mean intelligence or education; plenty of brilliant people have embraced tribal supremacy, and plenty of people without diplomas see through it instantly. Rationality in the moral sense means a willingness to apply principles consistently — to accept that a rule you invoke for yourself binds you when others invoke it too.

The inverted hierarchy fails this test catastrophically. Ask its defenders: if it is legitimate for America to subordinate universal human dignity to national and ethnic self-assertion, is it legitimate for China to do the same? For Russia? For any regime persecuting a minority in the name of the Volk, the nation, the faith? The honest answer under MAGA's logic is yes — which is why the movement's leaders so consistently express admiration for strongmen abroad. The tribalist cannot object in principle to other tribes' supremacism; he can only object that his tribe is losing. That is not a moral position. It is a power position wearing morality's clothes, and rational people recognize the costume.

There is a second failure of reason, subtler but just as damning: the inversion is self-refuting on its own patriotic terms. The America that MAGA claims to exalt is admirable precisely because of its universalist commitments — the ones the movement wants to discard. Strip away "all men are created equal," strip away the Statue of Liberty's welcome, strip away the postwar order America built on the premise that some things must never again be done to human beings anywhere, and what remains is not a greater America. It is just another ethnostate with better geography. The movement destroys the thing it worships in the act of worshipping it wrongly.

The Historical Ledger

If moral argument fails to persuade, history should terrify. The inverted hierarchy has been tried, repeatedly, and the results are not ambiguous. Societies that elevated blood and nation above humanity did not achieve durable greatness; they achieved spasms of mobilized fury followed by ruin. Germany's twelve-year experiment in racial supremacy ended in fire, partition, and generations of shame. The apartheid state, for all its fortifications, collapsed under the weight of its own moral impossibility. The century's ethnonationalist projects — in the Balkans, in Rwanda's genocidal radio broadcasts, in every pogrom that promised national purification — devoured their own societies first and most thoroughly.

The mechanism is depressingly consistent. Tribal supremacy requires enemies to sustain itself, and when external enemies run short, it manufactures internal ones. The circle of the truly loyal contracts. Institutions that once served everyone are repurposed as weapons of the faction. Talent flees, trust evaporates, and the paranoid style consumes the very cohesion it promised to restore. "Swift destruction" is not hyperbole; it is the historical median. The Thousand-Year Reich lasted twelve years.

The Seeds Already Sprouting

One need not predict America's future to see the pattern beginning. A movement that places tribe above truth must eventually attack the institutions that adjudicate truth: courts, science, journalism, elections themselves. A movement that places tribe above law must eventually excuse lawlessness by the tribe's champions, and it has. A movement that defines national belonging by identity rather than by shared civic commitment must eventually read tens of millions of citizens out of the nation — and its rhetoric about "real Americans" does exactly that. Each step corrodes the load-bearing walls of the republic: the peaceful transfer of power, equal justice, the presumption that political opponents are legitimate.

A society can survive bad policy. It cannot survive the collapse of the shared moral grammar that makes it one society rather than two armed camps.

Restoring the Hierarchy

The answer to MAGA is not contempt for the people within it, which merely confirms their narrative of elite disdain, nor is it a rootless cosmopolitanism that treats national loyalty as embarrassing. The answer is the restoration of the proper order: humanity above nation, nation above party, party above self. That order permits — indeed demands — a robust patriotism, but a patriotism that can be proud without being supremacist, that can secure borders without dehumanizing those who cross them, that can put citizens first without putting humanity last.

America's claim to greatness has always been its aspiration, however imperfectly pursued at times, to be a nation justified by universal principles. The inverted hierarchy abandons that claim in exchange for the oldest and emptiest idol in human history: the tribe worshipping itself.  Rational people find it repugnant because it is.  What's more, history warns that societies that embrace it don't decline gracefully, they break.
