Twenty-year-old Learner Tien captured headlines at Montreal’s National Bank Open by defeating Argentina’s Thiago Agustín Tirante in two sets to reach the quarterfinals, making him the youngest American to achieve the feat at the event since Andy Roddick.

On the women’s side, Leylah Fernandez pulled off a major upset in front of the crowd against No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva before falling to Naomi Osaka.  Advancing past the partisan crowd, Osaka now moves on to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina in their first career meeting.

In the WNBA, rookie Mai Yamamoto made the most of her first extended minutes for the Las Vegas Aces, exploding for 16 points including four three-pointers.  However, it came during a historic blowout as the New York Liberty dominated the contest with a 40-point margin of victory.  One of the league’s tallest players at 6-foot-11, Han Xu contributed 14 points to the lopsided win, showcasing the depth of the Liberty roster in the high-scoring affair.

Over the weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina, two Asian players secured strong top five finishes at the Wyndham Championship.  Taiwanese golfer Kevin Yu claimed sole possession of fourth place, taking home a payout of $417,000, while South Korea’s Tom Kim finished in a tie for fifth place, earning $328,000 for his efforts.

NFL free agent veteran kicker Younghoe Koo had a tryout with the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, August 8th.  He began last season with his long-tenured Atlanta Falcons before being cut after squandering a game-tying field goal in the final seconds of week one’s loss.  This tryout for the former Pro Bowler and league scoring leader could serve as the final chance to salvage his career and secure a roster spot for the upcoming season.
